Channel 9’s chief footy reporter, Tom Morris, has made a surprising switch to rival network Channel 7. The 34-year-old informed Channel 9 on Friday morning about accepting a lucrative offer from Channel 7, as reported by Code Sports.
The successful recruitment was driven by Channel 7’s head of sport, Chris Jones, alongside SEN boss Craig Hutchison. This addition strengthens Channel 7’s lineup of top football talent.
Despite the move, Morris is not expected to take on a major on-air role. Mitch Cleary remains Channel 7’s chief footy reporter, but together with Morris and Xander McGuire, recently also poached from Channel 9, they form a strong team.
This is among several recent high-profile signings for Channel 7, which previously recruited Kane Cornes from Channel 9 ahead of the 2024 AFL season. Morris reportedly decided to switch due to Channel 7 holding broadcast rights to both football and cricket.
Morris has been with Channel 9 since January 2024.
"Seven’s head of sport, Chris Jones and SEN boss Craig Hutchison were behind the successful poaching attempt, which will see Morris join an already stacked roster of top footy talent."
"He has been with Nine since January 2024."
