Florida Gators’ 7-foot-9 center Olivier Rioux stepped onto the court for the first time, officially becoming the tallest player in college basketball history. His debut came in a 104-64 victory over North Florida at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville.
With two minutes left in the game and UF leading 102-61, fans among the 10,065 in attendance began chanting his nickname, calling out for “Oli.” Coach Todd Golden responded by putting Rioux into the lineup, fulfilling the long-awaited moment for both the player and the crowd.
“It felt great,” said the 19-year-old Canadian. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Although Rioux didn’t register a point or rebound, his appearance alone was enough to secure a unique place in the sport’s record books. He surpassed Kenny George, who stood at 7-foot-7 and played for UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008, to become the tallest player in college basketball history.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux said, reflecting on the experience as he continues adjusting to campus life where he frequently attracts fans for photos and autographs.
His teammates cheered him on as he entered the court, including close friend Micah Handlogten, who at 7-foot-1 still looks up to Rioux—literally and figuratively.
“So much fun,” Handlogten said. “When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and told him, ‘Play with confidence.’”
Olivier Rioux’s debut marked a historic moment for college basketball, celebrated by fans and teammates as the towering 7-foot-9 freshman entered the court and made NCAA history with his first appearance.
